Sundazed blurb
Famously forged in a cauldron of intense artistic pressure, Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band emerged as a group unlike any other in popular music. For this transcendental performance in Oxford, England on June 6th, 2005, founding member John “Drumbo” French assembled an all-star cast of Magic Band veterans. This recording, personally mixed by John French, captures the power and passion of a band reborn!
Radar Station overview from Steve Froy
If you were lucky enough to see the band on their 2005 tour you’ll know just how spinetinglingly great the Magic Band played. All of those shows were recorded and John French picked this performance at Oxford’s Zodiac Club as a particular favourite of his.
This isn’t the complete show, there were more than just these 18 songs performed. The between song gaps and/or chat have been edited or faded out. Personally I’d prefer the whole show but that would have made it a double disc set and therefore more expensive to produce (and less likely to have been released). Even so this is pretty much an essential purchase. There’s not a duff track on here!
It’s nicely packaged. The cover design giving a nod to the Strictly Personal artwork. The digipak opening out three times to reveal some great photos and a short piece by John French about the Oxford show.
Intriguingly the cover lists the title as 1: Oxford UK – June, 6 2005. Does that mean this is the first in a series? I do know John delivered more than one show to Sundazed … so are they going to deliver some more of these fine shows to us?
A couple of the photos used appear uncannily exactly the same as those sent to the Radar Station soon after the show by Andy Swapp … but there’s no acknowledgement of this on the cover … check out more of Andy’s photos and his review of the Zodiac show
