Album overview from Steve Froy

When I first heard about this I thought, oh no, not yet another collection of tracks from Safe As Milk and Mirror Man. However, this one has a bit of a twist to it.

A short (47 minutes), sharp compilation of tracks from the remastered releases of Safe As Milk and The Mirror Man Sessions. All of the long Mirror Man jams are omitted in preference for some of the alternate takes that first appeared on I May Be Hungry but I Sure Ain’t Weird. Probably one of the more interesting compilations that have been released although there are no surprises for any fan who already owns everything. This would make a good introduction for someone who is more ‘rock’ oriented.

The cover has (for me) a previously unseen photograph which has been treated to resembled the fish-eye image used on Safe As Milk. The rest of the front cover has been treated to look creased and crumpled.

There is a short history of the band inside written by Brendon Griffin (of the Great Rock Discography apparently). This is mostly correct although it seems Herb Bermann “was recruited as much for his writing experience as his bass playing” – this, of course, is rubbish. And while I’m nit-picking Ry Cooder was replaced by Gerry McGee not Jeff Cotton.

It’s selling at a cheap price so it’s worth picking up.
