The Rhino Handmade press release / mail out

Greetings Earthling!

This Monday, 17 July 2000, at Noon Pacific Daylight Savings Time [1900 UTC], The Archivists at The Rhino Handmade Institute Of Petromusicology will begin taking orders for a 2-CD set of PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED live performances by CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND titled ‘I’m Going To Do What I Wanna Do: Live At My Father’s Place 1978’

From March 1966 to September 1982, Don Van Vliet, operating as CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, and various incarnations of THE MAGIC BAND released Twelve Albums and Several Assorted Singles of Some Of The Most Remarkable Music Ever Performed By Any Gathering Of Human Beings With Opposable Thumbs.

In 1978, CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND were signed to Warner Bros. Records in the USA. With a previously recorded album (called ‘Bat Chain Puller’ and recorded with Frank Zappa) caught up in legal proceedings and the disposition of those unissued masters still up in the air, Don Van Vliet began the recording process anew. This Warner Bros. album would be a collection of new recordings of some of the compositions from the missing-in-action ‘Bat Chain Puller’ combined with many never-before-recorded compositions. This new album was then accordingly and hybridically christened ‘Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)’.

In support of the US release of this album, Don and the Band undertook a promotional club tour. On Saturday 18 November 1978 CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND performed at My Father’s Place in New York City. The members of The Magic Band were the same as had been on the ‘Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)’ album: Jeff Moris Tepper on Guitars, Richard Redus on Guitars and Accordion, Eric Drew Feldman On Bass Guitar and Keyboards, Bruce Fowler on Trombone and Air Bass and Robert Williams on Drums and Percussion. My Father’s Place was located under a motorway bridge, held about 200 people and the patrons sat at long tables and could dine whilst listening if they wished. This astounding show was recorded and mixed directly to two-track tape. And this two-track tape was then later broadcast on WLIR-FM in early December.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND ‘I’m Going To Do What I Wanna Do: Live At My Father’s Place 1978’ presents this mixed-on-the-spot-to-two-track performance in its entirety. And, if we say so ourselves, what An Outstanding Entirety it truly is. This is the complete performance. Every splendid Magic Band note. Every stunning Beefheart syllable. 19 tracks on 2 compact discs. And, by the way, it needed to be on two compact discs because the gig runs about four minutes longer than the capacity of any single audio CD and The Archivists would not consider editing out any of the performance or any of the between-song interactions.

As Mr Van Vliet has exclusively devoted himself to painting for almost the last two decades, there will -most regretfully- almost assuredly never be another chance to again see CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND in concert. So for fans -both old and new- ‘I’m Going To Do What I Wanna Do: Live At My Father’s Place 1978’ presents a singular celebratory opportunity to experience the sheer awe and uncompromising astonishment of The Captain full strength and front and center.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND ‘I’m Going To Do What I Wanna Do: Live At My Father’s Place 1978’ is available in an individually-numbered limited edition of 5,000 (five thousand) copies. It is not distributed to any store on the planet. It is distributed directly from us to you. It is available only from The Archivists at the Rhino Handmade Website at: http://www.rhinohandmade.com

The complete track listing for CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND ‘I’m Going To Do What I Wanna Do: Live At My Father’s Place 1978’ is at the bottom of this e-mail. And sound samples for every track will be available on the Rhino Handmade Website this coming Monday at Noon Pacific.
