Unreleased Spotlight Kid outtake

Carry me and my baby to colored land
Drink paint run run
Drink paint run run

When the sun goes down, we’ll be done
Drink paint run run
Drink paint run run

Pick up ypur glass, baby, ‘n’ look me in the eyes
We’ll drink paint, toast our love in the sun
Drink paint run run

Carry me and my baby to colored land
Drink paint run run
Drink paint run run

When the sun goes down, we’ll be done
Drink paint run run
Drink paint run run

Carry me and my baby to colored land
Drink paint run run

When the sun holds hands and runs
Around the blue ocean, around the red sun

When the sun goes down, we’ll be done
Drink paint run run
Drink paint run run

Carry me and my baby to colored land
Drink paint run run
Drink paint run run

We’ll hold hands, baby, ‘n’
Drink paint run run
Around the blue ocean, around the red sun
Drink paint run run

When the sun goes down, we’ll be done
Drink paint run run
Drink paint run run

Carry me and my baby to colored land
Drink paint run run
Drink paint run run

(1971)

Transcribed by Steve Froy.

Recorded at Record Plant Studios, Los Angeles, October/November 1971 as part of the Spotlight Kid sessions.

A seven minute plus boogie with harmonica and guitar solo breaks. The lyrics don’t seem to be fully formed and are heavily repeated (I haven’t bothered to transcribe every repeat!) which is probably why it was left off the album. It reappeared with improved lyrics in 1980 on Doc at the Radar Station as Run Paint Run Run

  1. Please note that, although lyrically this is a precursor of “Run Paint Run Run” and has one of the riffs of that song, musically this is a prototype of the title track of “Ice Cream for Crow”.
