I was on the staff of KHSU then, at the time student-run. The Magic Band were my next door neighbors in Arcata and they rehearsed with Don in a barn up in Moonstone. This was the Clear Spot era and they did some great shows at Winterland. Time passed and the band split off, becoming Mallard. We threw a KHSU benefit on campus with Mallard, tix were 95 cents (our frequency was 90.5FM) and broadcast the show live. Don and his wife came to the door and paid their 95-cents — which I thought was very sweet — and before long, he was up on the stage rockin’ a few songs. Somewhere there is a tape…maybe.
