Thanks to the tireless work of the group dedicated to scouring recordings of John Peel radio shows for musical rarities a previously unknown version of Mirror Man has been discovered. Found on the tape of John’s show from Sunday 21st January 1968 was a good quality recording of Yellow Brick Road from the Safe As Milk album rather than taken from the band’s first Top Gear session which wasn’t recorded until three days later, and is introduced by Don himself who was obviously in the studio with John. The great John Peel’s record and memorabilia collection is, sadly, in the process of being dismantled. On 14 June 2022 two hundred items will be auctioned by Bonhams, the London auction house, under the heading Live In Session. Ever since Don started complaining about the ‘bromo seltzer’ that had been added to the Strictly Personal album fans have wondered what it would have sounded like without Bob Krasnow’s pyschedelicized production. Surely the pristine untreated master tapes were tucked away in storage somewhere people thought. Not so.
