Tom Waits "had the nerve to think he could sing like me"

Last night’s broadcast of Don Van Vliet’s 1993 interview with Co de Kloet, with musical accompaniment recorded in 2008 by Gary Lucas, can be heard until 10th September at the Dutch radio station NPS website [no longer available].

The programme is two hours long. Tom Waits, says Don, “.. had the nerve to think he could sing like me.”

  1. Please can someone advise on how to download the interview to my PC? Thanks for any help. Jason.

  2. Is it possible to save the interview in my PC or to listen to eat after September 10th? It would be a pity not to be able to listen to this again…

  3. Many thanks Derek for bringing this remarkable interview to my attention and indeed the link.

  4. Not saying that you should record the interview, but this is a free and open source audio recording thingy.

  5. I can listen until sept 10th…and I hear about this on Sept 14th!

    oh well…

as for the Tom Waits quote, I would have to hear it in context. Tom has acknowledged Don’s artistry, and apparently Tom developed his raspy schtick independant from Don, only hearing the Captain later in the 70’s.

Similiar, yes. Both are artists and great ones. Of course Don was singing like that years before Tom even tasted a cigarette!

he developed his schtick before getting around to listening to Don. Tom’s wife made him listen to Don’s old records

  7. Anywhere I can hear this now? I would love to hear this interview.

  8. As I mentioned in February some of the interview (without Gary Lucas accompaniment) is posted at the NPS website
