Anyone yet to explore the potential of Internet radio stations
should begin at gogaga.com which hosts numerous 24 hour live broadcasts
of music encompassing virtually any style imaginable.
The site features around 20 channels with each bringing a different
style of music. While Radar Station visitors may find a few of
the channels a little tepid, you are guaranteed to find something
more than worth hearing after a brief flick through what is on
offer. Just home in on the good stuff.
Each channel has a page of information and links to further details
about featured artists. The automatically updated playlist tells
you exactly what you are listening to at any one time, along with
links to order the featured albums should you so desire.
My personal favourites among the channel's are Ninja Tune artist
/ breakbeat terrorist Amon Tobin's own slot, available round the
clock as a continuous broadcast bringing a host of both weird
and easy beats. The jazz channel makes perfect listening on an
lazy Sunday morning, and the electronic section features several
sub-channel's of it's own, of which the down tempo broadcasts
shouldn't be missed.
Certain channels do occasionally drift into (or firmly occupy)
the mainstream, which is a shame, and somewhat undermines the
prime appeal of Internet radio in that it gives the opportunity
to hear music that you simply can't easily hear elsewhere.
It was surprising to hear Fatboy Slim played on the otherwise
excellent breakbeat channel when one has a 50/50 chance of hearing
him on walking into any high street shop, but that's only a minor
niggle. You can just avoid the MOR channels and enjoy some of
the more adventurous music on offer elsewhere at gogaga.com
