Apologies to non-UK
residents who may feel a little left out by this month's featured
site, but it was simply too good to pass over.
The Jazz Site is the
ultimate guide to jazz based in the UK, featuring over 4,000 pages
of extensive information. The site is run by a registered charity
(Jazz Services) founded in the early eighties with the aim to
promote jazz and to inform and entertain the UK jazz community.
The centrepiece is
the excellent Jazz Service Database which contains a wealth of
information about UK artists, promoters, venues, photographers,
labels, festivals, etc., along with sound clips of hundreds of
the artists featured. Almost anything you want to find out will
either be listed in here, or you'll find pointers to the places
that can help you.
You can also read copies
of Jazz UK magazine in PDF format. Jazz UK is the
UK's most popular jazz publication which aims to attract new listeners
as well as to keep the specialists informed. The latest issue
at the time of writing (September / October 2000) features articles
on jazz in the Caribbean and an analysis of Louis Armstrong's
solos, along with news, reviews and gig listings. It's awkward
to read the magazine on screen due to the format, but the articles
are well worth printing off to sit back and read in comfort.
This is an amazing
resource, useful to the idly curious, hard-core specialists, seasoned
musicians and industry insiders alike, and its excellent design
affirms that it has style as well as substance.
