CD Straight to Black on Shimmy Disc Drazy Hoops is a US singer/songwriter. On this album he uses a small backing band plus string players to create sophisticated melodic songs, one of which was used in the film 'The Book of Life' that starred P.J. Harvey. And what are 'drazy hoops'? According to Gary Marker it was a spoonerism of another Don expression 'hazy droops'. On the alt-fan newsgroup a few years back Gary said that:- "More than once, in proximity of a woman with a rather large mammary assemblage, I heard Don mutter (sotto voce) "Eyeball the droops on that doll, will ya?" He was always inventing what seemed to be his own comical, clever slang for just about every bodily part, situation or utilitarian tool - but more often than not it kind of sounded like archaic, '40s hipster slang - but not quite. So you can pretty much take the "droops" part of it from there. Why something would evolve to and from "hazy droops" to "drazy hoops" may have been his hazy state of mind, then later simply his penchant for playing with the language, which he was reinventing on a daily basis." |
