This album was created as the Magic Band slowly disintegrated, and is not a
favorite. Very little trace of the originality found in earlier albums remains,
and a 'commercial' feel pervades all the songs.
However, by normal standards, this is not a bad album. It has a very mainstream
sound, but it isn't bad as long as you are not expecting it to sound like his
other work. Best as a purchase for completists or for people that only like his
Clear Spot-era material.
Graham Johnston:
This album isn't one that I would recommend as a first time purchase, as it
is strikingly different from what one may expect the Captain to produce. Commonly
regarded as one of the Captain's two worst albums, many Beefheart fans hate Unconditionally
Guaranteed with a real passion. However, it is an album that I happen to adore.
These are mostly very strong, simple love songs, admittedly with none of the sharp
corners that you may be used to with Beefheart's music, though none could be described
as being 'conventional' when compared with more conventional artists. Give it
a go.
Reviews
Giant Step For The Captain - Unconditionally
Guaranteed, by 'S.P.' and taken from the 6th April 1974 edition of Sounds.
Unconditionally
Guaranteed by Graham Johnston. I chose to give the least popular Beefheart
album a glowing review in Perfect Sound Forever's Beefheart special. Young
children have laughed at me in the street ever since, but I hold my head high.
