Album overviews
Justin Sherill:
This album dates from Captain Beefheart leaving his "Tragic Band" and joining
up with Zappa. Don was apparently having trouble with alcohol at the time, and
doesn't really shine as a member of the band. Some recordings from this era are
excellent, though this album doesn't have any of them. Best to buy if you also
enjoy Zappa.
Graham Johnston:
If you don't like Zappa then this is probably best avoided. I love him and
so for me Bongo Fury is a great purchase. As Jimmy Carl Black pointed
out, Don is the best singer that Frank ever had. The two
Beefheart-penned tunes are are as lyrically impressive as ever,
and many of the Zappa tunes have some very funny moments. Don is,
however, clearly more at home singing his own words than Zappa's,
most noticeable on the ploddy Poofter's Froth Wyoming Plans Ahead.
Don't let me put you off - there are some great moments on here.
Never had a proper release in the UK due to Don being contractually
tied up with Virgin Records.
