There’s this part in “Moonlight On Vermont” (Trout Mask Replica) where Beefheart intones “Come out to show dem” repeatedly. Then there’s this early piece of music by the “minimalist” composer Steve Reich called “Come Out” where Reich loops a quote from someone (about being beaten) and then gradually delays a second channel of it causing a very strange effect. The quote which is sampled and then repeated is “Come out to show them.” Steve Reich recorded come out in 1967, and Trout Mask came out in 1969.
Has anyone else noticed this connection?
Don was quite intrigued with this recording, which I remember being on an LP that was a sampler of several “electronic music” recordings. I only recall the name Stockhausen on the LP, and have always associated the recording with that name.
